The TEJEDA HIKING WEEK is a week holiday program that Walk in Gran Canaria organizes every year during the month of May. It is a program specially created for people who wish to experience a few days walking on the wonderful nature of Gran Canaria and sharing good moments with other people coming from different places in the world.

Tejeda is a one of the  “Beautiful Villages in Spain” group, a perfect plateau to enjoy nature and to start the routes included on the program. As a small village, Tejeda becomes a perfect place for socializing with the locals and the other people participating on the Tejeda Hiking Week.

You can participate on the TEJEDA HIKING WEEK in two ways:

  • Full holiday package (includes the accommodation you chose, transfers to and from the routes, Airport-Tejeda-Airport transportation, breakfast, 6 walking routes with english speaking guide, picnic for the routes, program insurance)
  • 6 hiking routes package (english speaking guide, includes transportation to and from the route, picnic and routes insurance)

May 14th, Sunday

–:–        Arrival to Gran Canaria

–:–        Welcome at the airport and transfer to Tejeda (there will be 4 transfer services to Tejeda this day (11:00/14:00/17:00/21:00).

Tejeda is located on the centre of the Island. It is a little village from where you will enjoy of great views over Gran Canaria’s west side, specially is the look over Roque Bentaiga, a sacred rock for the ancient islands’ inhabitants. Tejeda has recently been included on the list of the 10 most beautiful villages in Spain. In Tejeda is located the highest winery in Gran Canaria, which accounts with several awards for the quality of its wines.  Also, Tejeda is known for producing almond sweets and pastries, the almond trees that grow on the area give a magical aspect to the village during the month of February. The village offers also the possibility to visit some little traditional museums of great interest.

08:30     Meet with the guide of the day. Guided Walking Tour: Roque Nublo, route to the heart of Gran Canaria

The Roque Nublo is a natural symbol of Gran Canaria, a “must visit” while you are on the Island. The Roque Nublo Hiking Route starts in El Garañón, and runs through the border of the “Caldera de Tejeda” (the cauldron of Tejeda), which result from numerous volcanic eruptions along the History. Most of the time this path passes between endemic plant species such as the Canary pine tres. From La Fogalera viewpoint the views becomes breathtaking, we can see a stunning sight of the Roque Bentaiga from there, most of the days, we can also see Mount Teide over the clouds. We will continue hiking around Roque Nublo up to its base, a large plain on which surface is set up this huge basaltic rock. The route will finish in Tejeda.

Stop in La Culata for a drink.

08:30     Meet with the guide of the day. Guided Walking Tour: Way to Valsendero, the enchanted forest route

We will start our route near the volcano Montañón Negro, a quiet hamlet located near Valleseco. This route follows a path that goes through the Finca del Pinillo, a large private property that belongs to the Heredad de Aguas de Arucas y Firgas. The lush and varied vegetation of the valley is impressive. During our walk we will enjoy of the remains of the Laurisilva forest, pines trees , ferns, chestnut and walnut trees, which means that when the fall comes much of the ravine is tinged with ocher and reddish color, which is unusual in the Canary Islands. The strange shapes of many of the trees and the abundance of lichens on their branches give this place a special appearance. You will have the impression you are walking on an Enchanted Forest.

08:30  Meet with the guide of the day. Guided Walking Tour: Natural Triangle of Gran Canaria: Guayadeque, Los Marteles, Tirajana’s Viewpoint.

This walking route takes places in one of the most interesting orographic areas of Gran Canaria: Guayadeque Valley, Caldera de Los Marteles and Tirajana viewpoint. The route starts at the the Caldera de los Marteles (a 500 m. diameter crater), where the Guayadeque Valleys’s begin, after crossing the crater, you will head for the Caldera de Tirajana look out point walking under a pine tree forest. Little by little you will reach the top of Guayadeque’s Valley and making a long and beautiful zig zag way you will descend to the valley. This part of the route becomes a visit to a real botanical garden, full with all type of endemic plants. The route finishes at Montaña de las Tierras, a very interesting place where you will enjoy of the cave houses and the beautiful views over Guayadeque’s Valley. 

We will make a stop at the end of the route to have time for a drink at the cave restaurant in Montaña de las Tierras.

08:30     Meet your guide for the day. Guided hiking route: Way to Artenara, the 100 Valleys Route

The route starts in Artenara (the highest village of Gran Canaria), where you can visit the beautiful church, the charming cave museum and also the Ermita de la Virgen de la Cuevita. After leaving Artenara you will walk along the edge of the Caldera de Tejeda in the direction of Cruz de Tejeda. Most of the route takes place following a path in the middle of the pine forest. You will walk near Cuevas Caballero, a cave complex where the ancient inhabitants of Gran Canaria used to live. The views on the way are spectacular: Roque Bentaiga, Roque Nublo, Acusa, the valleys of the west side of Gran Canaria…. After reaching Cruz de Tejeda, you will follow the path to Tejeda.

08:30     Meet your guide for the day. Guided hiking route: Wonders of Santa Lucía

The Caldera de Tirajana is an area of extraordinary natural beauty. There, the high mountains and deep ravines shelter the largest palm oasis in the Canary Islands and the charming hamlets of canarian houses perfectly fitted on this landscape of whimsical stones. The Caldera de Tirajanas is a land of tabaibas, palm trees and olives trees, it is also home to one of the most beautiful villages in Gran Canaria: Santa Lucía. When reaching the palm trees oasis you have the feeling you have travelled to another part of the world, there, the Phoenix Canariensis become the landscape protagonist. During winter, it is posible to find ponds and streams that keep green the vegetation of the area. In the middle of the Caldera arise, with a  whimsical shape, La Fortaleza, a singular mountain that was inhabited by a large number of Canariis (aborigines of Gran Canaria) in the old times. Hamlets with white and well kept houses give a charming touch to this special place, where locals live in total harmony with nature. The route finishes in Santa Lucía, a quiet village located in a priviledge natural location, which is worth a visit.

We will make a stop in Santa Lucía for a drink before returning to Tejeda.

08:30     Meet your guide for the day. Guided Walking Tour: Route Agaete’s Valley

You will start this route near the Tamadaba Forest, one of the largest pine forest in Gran Canaria. For a few miles you have to follow a road that goes parallel to the dams of the Area (Lugarejo, Los Pérez…). In Los Hoyos you take a path that takes you to Agaete’s Valley.  The area is impressive, and very isolated. On the way you will pass near a winery and a coffee plantation, also you will walk near one of the most important archeological sites in Gran Canaria. Your hotel is located at Puerto de las Nieves,  a quiet little village where you can enjoy the sea and also of the views of the impressive cliffs of the west side of Gran Canaria.

We will finish the day and the official activities of the TEJEDA HIKING WEEK with a lunch at Puerto de las Nieves, where you will also have the chance to swim to celebrate the end of the trip.

Return transfer to Tejeda.

Hotel Rural Fonda de la Tea


The Rural Hotel Fonda de la Tea, a former 19th century inn is located in Tejeda.

After being closed for almost fifty years, it has reopened its doors converted into a spectacular Hotel that has managed to conserve the welcoming style in which its humble proprietors accommodated doctors and poets, painters and other passing guests.
